Canada Post strikes may delay delivery of cheques and statements

The continued rotating strikes by the Canadian Union of Postal Workers may result in a delivery delay of SOCAN cheques and statements.

Unfortunately, this is beyond our control, and Canada Post customers across the country continue to see delays for parcel and mail delivery, as services are suspended in areas affected by the strike.

We remind you that the secure, direct deposit of royalties and statements to your account is an alternative already preferred by the strong majority of our members. This takes only a few minutes to set up; please go here to complete the direct deposit form.

SOCAN surprises Megan Bonnell with No. 1 Song Award for “Separate Rooms”

SOCAN was pleased to surprise singer-songwriter and SOCAN member Megan Bonnell with a No. 1 Song Award to for co-writing “Separate Rooms,” which topped the CBC Radio 2 Top 20 chart on May 24, 2018.

Bonnell co-wrote her song with Donovan Woods (previously awarded for “Separate Rooms” during Canadian Country Music Week 2018), Josh Van Tassel, and producer Chris Stringer. The song is also co-published by Arts & Crafts and Warner Chappell Music Canada.

SOCAN A&R Representative Melissa Cameron made the unexpected presentation to Bonnell, Stringer, and Amy Eligh of Arts & Crafts on Nov. 16, 2018, at a pop-up event at Ella’s Uncle in West downtown Toronto. The morning pop-up supported the release of her current Separate Rooms album on vinyl, in advance of her performance that night at The Mod Club, as part of the “Massey Hall Presents” series.

Music publisher ole appoints Helen Murphy as new CEO

Music publisher and rights management company ole has announced that music industry veteran Helen Murphy has succeeded Robert Ott as CEO, while Ott will continue to serve as an advisor to Murphy and the ole Board of Directors.

Said Murphy, in a statement, “Given the ever-increasing ways people have to consume music, I believe we have an incredible opportunity at ole to continue to create value for our songwriters, our artists, and our global production music and intellectual property business partners. I look forward to working with the team at ole.”

Murphy is founder and President of International Media Services (IMS), a company that provides strategic and financial advice to clients in global media and entertainment industries.
Prior to IMS, Murphy was Executive Vice President and CFO for the Warner Music Group. In 2012, Murphy was the lead negotiator for Sony to acquire the EMI Music Publishing catalog for $1 billion. She has also previously held a series of senior financial positions, including CFO at Polygram Music Group.

Murphy’s track record, industry knowledge, and creative relationships are expected to lead the next phase of ole’s growth and development.
