Because of the ongoing pandemic, the Gala Québec Cinéma was held online on June 10, 2020, at 7:00 p.m. ET on the Facebook page of Québec Cinéma, as well as on Radio-Canada. ca, ici.artv.ca, and ICI TÉLÉ’s Facebook page. Despite the situation, the non-profit organization – whose mission is to promote Québec’s film industry – still wanted to celebrate the exceptional work of the creators and makers of screen music by presenting the 24 Iris Awards virtually.

Six SOCAN #ComposersWhoScore were finalists in the Best Original Music category of the 2020 edition. It was Jean-Michel Blais who won the honour for his work in the film Matthias & Maxime.

Congratulations to him, and all the other finalists in the category.

  • Jean Massicotte and Jad Orphée Cham for Antigone, Published by: Ho-Tune Musique and ACPAV

The 2020 Iris Awards ceremony will remain available to watch on the Québec Cinéma website as well as on Radio-Canada. ca and ICI TOU.TV.

In the Top Secrets series, music creators whose songs have reached the peak of the BDS and corresponding ADISQ charts, and who’ve received SOCAN No. 1 Song Awards  for their accomplishments, describe how their chart-topping hits were created.

After writing and performing iconic songs for more than two decades, one might have thought that the Cowboys Fringants’ best years were behind them. Not so with “L’Amérique pleure” (“America is Crying”), a small gem of a song from last year’s album Les Antipodes.  With dark subject matter, and at five minutes long, it was unlikely to become a radio hit. Yet, after slowly maturing over the years and finally making it into the Cowboys’ impressive repertoire, the song reached No. 1 on the ADISQ and BDS charts in Québec, and maintained that position for 26 weeks! It’s an historic record that beats the 25 weeks the 2Frères song “Comme avant” held onto that spot on the same charts

From his home in L’Assomption, in the suburbs of Montréal, Cowboys Fringants songwriter and guitarist JF Pauzé recalls the birth of the song, and summarizes the impact that this unprecedented hit has had on the band, whose other members include Karl Tremblay, Marie-Annick Lépine and Jérôme Dupras.

In the midst of social distancing to combat the spread of the COVID-19 virus, SOCAN is continuing to operate at full capacity. To keep you posted about what we’re doing to adapt to the situation, and how we’re doing it, we present a series of SOCAN Leadership Updates – online video interviews with various SOCAN executives.

This time, SOCAN Chief Québec Affairs & Visual Arts Officer Geneviève Côté discusses her role as part of our Canada-wide organization, and how her previous experience as a music publisher and artist manager  helps her on a daily basis, as a SOCAN executive, to deal with the current issues of the Québec ecosystem.
