In a SOCAN Session at the organization’s Toronto office, Partner perform a stripped-down live version of their song “Play the Field,” which earned the 2018 SOCAN Songwriting Prize. Gabrielle Papillon won the SOCAN Songwriter of the Year honour for her song “When The Heart Attacks” at the 2018 Music Nova Scotia Awards, held Nov. 4, 2018, in Truro, NS.

Mo Kenney, David Myles, and Maxim Cormier each earned two awards. Kenney won Solo Recording and Rock Recording of the Year, for her album The Details. Myles took home trophies for Recording and Americana Recording of the Year, for Real Love. Cormier earned Acadian/Francophone Artist and Traditional/Roots Recording of the Year, the latter for Maxim and Gervais Cormier: Cape Breton Guitar. Various SOCAN licensees also won awards in the industry categories, including the Lunenburg Folk Harbour Society, for Community Presenter of the Year; The Halifax Jazz Festival, for Event of the Year: Mike Campbell (of The Carleton Music Bar & Grill), for Promoter of the Year; The Carleton itself, for Venue of the Year; East Coast Music Hour (CBC), for Radio Program of the Year; and CKDU-FM, 88.1 FM, for Radio Station of the Year.

SOCAN presented its ever-popular “Cooking Beats” panel, this time with one of Canada’s hottest beat-makers, Eestbound, at at the well-attended 2018 Nova Scotia Music Week (NSMW) conference leading up to the awards. Eestbound showed a packed room of NSMW delegates how he constructs a killer beat, and answered questions about the process of creating, developing, and shopping a beat.

SOCAN was also on the scene throuhgout the conference and awards, connecting with our many East Coast members, and attending daily conference panels and nightly festival showcase performances.
