In a SOCAN video interview from the 2017 JUNO Awards nominations media conference, 2016 JUNO Award winners in the Adult Alternative Album category Whitehorse (Luke Doucet and Melissa McClelland) discuss being nominated for 2017 in the Blues Album field for their up-to-the-minute take on electric Chicago blues, The Northern South; the challenge of overdubbing all of the parts on the album themselves, often using tape looping as they do when they play live; and their songwriting process.
In a SOCAN video interview from the 2017 JUNO Awards nominations media conference, Vocal Jazz Album of the Year nominee Barbra Lica briefly discusses co-writing for the album in London., England, and Toronto; how the process can be like a date; vocalists that she looks up to; and wanting to bring folk and Americana elements into jazz.
To mark the 30th anniversary of Bourse RIDEAU (Réseau indépendant des diffuseurs d’événements artistiques unis), SOCAN presented a captivating songwriters’ circle that featured SOCAN members Luc De Larochelière, Ingrid St-Pierre, Ian Kelly and Elisapie on the magnificent stage of Québec City’s Capitole Theatre. The focus of the 2017 RIDEAU was on the stakes of the digital age.
The four songwriters captivated the audience with several songs each, while sharing anecdotes about them, and opening up about their relationship with songwriting. The atmosphere was filled with camaraderie, and the chemistry that bonded all four as songwriters was palpable.
Paroles & Musique Editor Eric Parazelli, met with them right after the event to ask about their experience of the circle. You can see that, and a few excerpts from the circle, in the video.
